AHPA is partnering with Dyad Labs to present a two-day workshop that will cover basic chromatography and provide hands-on lab experience.

Chromatography is an essential tool in quality control and characterization of botanical ingredients and finished products as required by current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) regulations (21 CFR part 111). Chromatography methods are a relatively simple, versatile, convenient, and sensitive way to determine and document quality and support specifications, especially for highly processed herbal ingredients or combinations of herbs and extracts.

Chromatography provides quantitative information about the main active constituents or marker compounds present in herbal products and can be used in fingerprinting of herbs.

  • Basic Principles of Column Chromatography (Phenomenex)
  • Chromatography using UPLC (Waters)
  • Chromatography using LC/MS/MS (Sciex)
  • Chromatography using GC/MS/MS and GC/FID (Agilent)
  • Chromatography Applications (Dyad)

Hands-On Lab Experience

  • Attendees will break into four groups and will be guided in preparing samples for an assay using UPLC, LC/MS/MS, and GC/MS/MS and GC/FID (Dyad)
  • Samples will be analyzed overnight
  • The four groups will take turns using each instrument
  • Results will be compared to the previous day's samples, and other samples (Vendors/Dyad)
