Whey powder causes recalls by Associated Milk Producers and several food brands

Company identifies this as a “precautionary recall”

Published: Wednesday, July 25, 2018

Associated Milk Producers Inc. announced on July 24, 2018 that it is recalling dry whey powder produced at the cooperative’s Blair, Wisc., dry whey plant on specific dates in May and June due to the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The company identified this as a “precautionary recall” and reported that all products shipped to the marketplace tested negative for Salmonella. The company also stated that all of its customers that received this material have been notified of this issue.

In related actions, several food brands have issued recalls that cite the presence of American Milk Producers’ whey powder in the last few days, including various Ritz® cracker products, Pepperidge Farms’ Goldfish® crackers, several breads and rolls distributed by Flowers Foods, Inc., and one variety of a Hungry Man® dinner. Each of the recall notices stated that no illnesses or adverse events have been reported in association with any of the recalled foods.

In addition, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb issued a statement yesterday to call attention to these recalls. The FDA announcement stated there are “likely other food products made by other manufacturers that also use this common ingredient, [so that] there may be other recalls initiated in the coming days.”

AHPA encourages members that sell products that contain whey powder to ascertain whether the whey powder that they use is from Associated Milk Producers Inc. and if so if it is subject to that company’s recall.
