AHPA's Tonnage Survey is "a vital index of native U.S. botanical consumption," according to the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) of the U.S. Department of the Interior. If your company is a primary raw material producer, your input is essential to helping defend ongoing sustainable harvest of North American herbs.

The latest survey has been expanded to track 51 herbal commodities representing 44 species, including popular ingredients such as American ginseng, black cohosh, cascara sagrada, Echinacea, saw palmetto, slippery elm, and witch hazel. Similar to previous AHPA tonnage surveys, this survey continues to focus on select North American herbs that are produced in part from wild-harvested populations. The survey includes expanded questions to further assess current trends and practices related to botanical raw materials.

Harvest information is a more powerful tool when harvest amounts are tabulated to include combined total usage. By working together, AHPA and the herbal products industry generate valuable information that helps ensure sustainable growth and stability. Participation in this survey also demonstrates the industry's commitment to sustainable harvests.

This year AHPA is transitioning to an online survey using Qualtrics to provide a more updated and intuitive survey experience for respondents, while offering sophisticated tools for collecting and analyzing data, and dynamic reporting of results. For questions or support when completing the survey or if you would prefer to fill out a PDF form rather than the online survey, contact Holly Chittum, AHPA Project Scientist, at

All identifying information submitted will be strictly confidential and no individual company's data will be disclosed to any other party. After identifying information has been stripped, the data will be analyzed and made available to AHPA members and the industry to help inform sustainability practices.
