The AHPA Foundation for Education and Research on Botanicals (AHPA ERB Foundation) has committed to provide financial support for the American ginseng program to be presented as part of the 2020 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, an annual 10-day event that takes place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The AHPA ERB Foundation is seeking matching funds from AHPA members to increase the Foundation’s support of this program. Tax-deductible donations can be made through the AHPA ERB Foundation website, or by contacting Stan Cowan (scowan@ahpa.org). Questions about the American ginseng program can be directed to Jane Wilson (jwilson@ahpa.org).

The program, titled “American ginseng: Local knowledge, global roots,” will feature experts in the ginseng industry including diggers, growers, and traders, as well as presenters with a wide knowledge of Appalachian communities and the long tradition that American ginseng has played in the culture and economy of this region.

Visitors will be able to interact with other presenters knowledgeable about ginseng, such as traditional medicine practitioners, herbalists, and researchers. Connections to Asian culture through American ginseng will be explored. Hands-on activities, exhibits, and musical performances geared toward both adults and children are expected to be included in the program.

The festival allows visitors to experience living traditions and cultures from both the United States and countries around the world. The 2020 event is scheduled to take place June 24-28 and July 1-5.
