IADSA update on international supplement regulations

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and is distributing the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash covers:

  • The European Commission has notified its proposed regulation for limits on pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in certain food products, including food supplements, to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
  • Belgium has issued advisories for 3 botanicals – Cananga odorata (limitation on safrole content), Cotinus coggygria (high tannin levels), and Rhus spp. (potential allergic reactions and high tannin levels).
  • The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has advised against excessive intake of vitamin D.
  • BfR is also advocating for improved agricultural techniques to reduce the presence of PAs in herbs/spices and food supplements.
  • France has alerted consumers regarding entities marketing food supplements with claims of curing or preventing COVID-19.
  • The Netherlands may request the European Commission to review limits for caffeine in food supplements under an Article 8 procedure.
  • Israel has notified WTO about revised limits for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in food products such as food supplements.
  • Brazil has a new resolution mandating a label when products such as foods and food supplements have a new formulation.
  • Ecuador issued rules for cannabis (hemp seed) supplements.
  • Peru has established a basic regulation governing health claims applicable to supplement products.
