In the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC's) Health Products Compliance Guidance, released in December 2022, FTC explained that claims about the health benefits of a product must meet the basic substantiation standard of "competent and reliable scientific evidence," and that randomized, controlled human clinical trials (RCTs) are the most reliable form of evidence and generally what experts would require for health benefit claims.
At the same time, research methods for claims substantiation are evolving, as virtual clinical trials are expanding the reach and diversity in clinical research participation and enthusiasm for the use of real-world evidence is growing.
