This intermediate level workshop will discuss a variety of concepts and issues, including the theory and foundations of High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), best practices in method development and validation, setting appropriate specifications and acceptance criteria, how to handle conflicting Certificates of Analysis, as well as exploring the nuances in data interpretation and analysis.

HPTLC is an analytical technique used to assess identity and quality of botanicals, articles of botanical origin, and other dietary ingredients. Often HPTLC methods can be developed and validated to not only confirm identity, but also to detect adulterants and contamination, including incorrect plant parts and closely related species. This technique can be appropriate and fit for purpose for evaluation of crude raw botanicals from powdered to whole form, extracts (powdered or liquid), and finished products, and is one of the most commonly applied methods for supporting identity specifications for botanical dietary ingredients.

While HPTLC is widely applied for regulatory compliance in the dietary supplements industry, data interpretation requires significant expertise. This 1.5-day virtual workshop provides detailed instruction from herbal and scientific experts in the natural product and dietary supplement industries.

Content covered in this virtual workshop will include:

  • What is HPTLC: a short review of the basics: theory, instrumentation, etc.

  • HPTLC parameters, optimizing implementation

  • Selection of botanical reference materials

  • Evaluating method parameters

  • How to develop and validate or identify and verify a method: resources & strategy

  • Choices that go into developing the proper method

  • How to respond to conflicting test results

  • Strategies to interpret gray zone results

  • Considerations for sample prep

  • Setting appropriate specifications

  • Advantages of using a universal solvent system

  • Q&A with the experts
